Intriguing Veteran Linebacker Linked to Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers have undergone some major changes to their defense this offseason. Arguably the biggest is the schematic change Jeff Hafley will be installing.

Green Bay’s new defensive coordinator will be changing the team’s base defense. After playing a 3-4 base under Joe Barry, Hafley is installing a 4-3 base.

It is something the players are excited about despite it meaning some position changes for players on the team. Edge rushers will now be defensive ends and the responsibility of the defensive tackles will change.

In the trenches, the Green Bay Packers are set. But at linebacker, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to add some more depth to the mix.

The team is going to be very young at the second line of defense. Quay Walker is locked into a starting spot and will likely be joined by second-round pick Edgerrin Cooper.

Bringing in someone with some more experience to help those young guys develop would be a smart decision. That is part of the reason Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has suggested the team sign free agent Kwon Alexander.

“Injuries have been an issue for Alexander throughout his NFL career. He played all 17 games in 2022, but he’s missed at least four games in every other since since 2017. However, he’s a seasoned vet who can provide leadership and be an effective second-level coverage option…

The Green Bay Packers could also use Alexander’s services after parting with linebacker De’Vondre Campbell early in the offseason. In Green Bay, Alexander could help mentor rookie second-round pick Edgerrin Cooper,” Knox wrote.

When healthy, Alexander has been productive. Despite being a late addition to the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, he chipped in across the board.

In nine games, he had 41 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack and one interception. He was excellent in pass coverage, allowing a passer rating of only 76.3. But, a torn Achilles ended his season prematurely.

Alexander may not be available during training camp and the early part of the season, but he is someone who could help the Green Bay Packers. Even if he isn’t heavily involved in the game plan, a veteran of his caliber brings a lot to the table in the locker room and at practice.
