Father, Daughter Die After Running Out Of Water On Hike In 100-Degree Heat

A father and daughter from Green Bay, Wisconsin, died after running out of water while hiking in Utah . The National Park Service said that the San Juan County Dispatch received a 911 text message on Friday (July 12) from a person at the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park saying they were lost.

They said they were hiking along the Syncline Trail and had run out of water as the temperature soared above 100 degrees.

Park rangers and a helicopter crew from the Bureau of Land Management were dispatched to try to locate them.

When search teams located the two, they were deceased .

They were not identified, but officials said the father was 53 years old and his daughter was 23.

The San Juan County Sheriff's Office and the National Park Service are continuing to investigate their deaths.

The National Park Service advised all hikers to ensure they are carrying enough water when they go on strenuous hikes in the heat.

"While temperatures remain high this summer, park visitors are advised to carry and drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity during midday heat," the agency said .
