Father, daughter found dead in Canyonlands National Park identified

SAN JUAN COUNTY, Utah ( ABC4 ) — The father and daughter who were found dead in Canyonlands National Park on Friday have been identified by the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

The two were identified as Albino Herrera Espinoza, 52, and his daughter, Beatriz Herrera, 23, of Green Bay, Wis.

San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said the two were hiking the Syncline Loop Trail at the Canyonlands National Park when they got lost and ran out of water. At the time of the incident, the air temperature was reportedly higher than 100 degrees.

The Price Communications Dispatch reportedly received emergency 911 text messages from the hikers, prompting an immediate response from the National Park Service. However, by the time Espinoza and Herrera were found, the two had already died.

Officials said their bodies were found in the Upheaval Dome area of the park. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said the area is located in the Island In the Sky District in the remote northwest portion of the county. The location was described as “remote and rugged.”

In the initial release, the National Park Service said temperatures are expected to remain high through the summer. Park visitors are advised to carry and drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity during the midday heat.
