Green Bay Packers Quarterback Surprisingly On Roster Bubble

Heading into training camp in 2024, there are a few positions people will be keeping an eye on for the Green Bay Packers. Among them is the quarterback spot.

Jordan Love isn’t in any danger of losing his starting spot. That is a role he should hold for years to come.

Why he will garner headlines is because of his lack of a long-term contract. Finalizing an extension with him is the No. 1 item on the team’s to-do list.

The competition for the backup job behind him will also garner some attention. Bringing in a veteran option has been discussed as a potential move during training camp.

The Green Bay Packers have last season’s backup, Sean Clifford, competing with 2024 seventh-round pick Michael Pratt. Should something happen to Love, how confident would the team be in either of those players starting games?

That could certainly play into why Zack Kruse of Packers Wire believes Clifford could be on the chopping block this offseason. He put together a piece detailing one player on the roster bubble at each position, and Clifford was chosen among the quarterbacks.

“Clifford had a strong summer as a rookie last year and is the slightly more experienced quarterback compared to seventh-round pick Michael Pratt, but the Packers are going to let Clifford and Pratt compete to be the primary backup behind Jordan Love in 2024.

It’s certainly possible the Packers will come out of camp and keep both Clifford and Pratt on the roster. Long-term development at the position — even with Love soon to sign a mega new deal — is a franchise priority.

Still, if Pratt is the better quarterback during training camp and earns the No. 2 job, Clifford could end up on the outside looking in to the 53-man roster. While a rookie, Pratt was a four-year starter at Tulane and has all the same intangibles as Clifford,” Kruse wrote.

Clifford was a fifth-round pick out of Penn State in the 2023 NFL Draft. He beat out the likes of Alex McGough and Danny Etling for the job last offseason.

This offseason, Pratt will provide him with legitimate competition. How those two perform will play a part in how the front office and coaching staff handle the depth chart.

Clifford has to play well enough to earn the No. 2 job. If he doesn’t, it could lead to a veteran being brought in to take his roster spot should Pratt not beat him out.
