Jordan Love reported to the Green Bay Packers training camp, but the quarterback will not practice until his contract extension gets done. On the day the camp begins in Green Bay, general manager Brian Gutekunst said he is "confident" the parties will reach an agreement over the next few days, but mentioned that Love won't participate in the activities without an extension in place. It’s a hold in.

"I think so, but you never know," Gutekunst said when asked about a deal getting done soon. "We're working really hard to get that done. It's really important for us."

Jordan Love's representatives contacted the Packers front office on Saturday to inform that Love wouldn't practice without an agreement.

"Hopefully he won’t miss too much time," Gutekunst added.

For Love, it makes sense as a leverage play, but also as a protection. An injury could have a big impact on his market value.

Without Jordan Love, head coach Matt LaFleur and quarterbacks coach Tom Clements will have to work with only two passers: Last year's fifth-round pick Sean Clifford and this year's seventh-round pick Michael Pratt. Last Friday, the team worked out veteran Jake Fromm .

"He’ll be at practice," head coach Matt LaFleur said. "He’s in the meetings, participating. Hopefully, we get something done sooner than later."

    Negotiations

Gutekunst and Love's people know something will get done soon . Details are preventing a deal at this point, and the general manager acknowledges how important it is to finalize the new contract.

"He's our franchise quarterback," Gutekunst said, adding that the delay is related to the future structure of the team's cap situation.

Jordan Love is under contract for 2024, slated to make $11 million. However, he obviously won't play until a deal is done to pay him market value.

This is the third time the Packers are negotiating a contract with Jordan Love. After his rookie deal in 2020, the parties also reached a one-year, bridge extension last season when the Packers decided to decline Love's fifth-year option.

Now, though, it's a different circumstance. Love has already played a season as the starter, so the Packers pretty much know he is the future of the franchise at quarterback . It's a matter of structure, and how Love's deal will affect the construction of the rest of the roster.
