The Green Bay Packers didn't have starting quarterback Jordan Love to start training camp . He reported and is in Green Bay, but is holding in and won't practice until a contract extension gets done.

Now, the Packers only have two available quarterbacks for drills and team activities — Sean Clifford is the immediate backup, and the other option is seventh-round rookie Michael Pratt. If the Packers eventually need another camp arm, the answer is in the coaching staff.

According to head coach Matt LaFleur, offensive assistant Sean Mannion will be ready just in case. After all, the assistant coach has just retired after a nine-year NFL career as a backup quarterback. He played for the Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and Seattle Seahawks.

Matt LaFleur said there will be an open competition at quarterback behind Jordan Love, even though Clifford starts training camp ahead because of his knowledge of the system.

Veteran Jake Fromm worked out for the Packers on Friday, but he was mostly a camp arm while the team evaluated receivers Rory Starkey and Jalen Wayne — both ended up signing, unlike Fromm.

More training camp day 1 notes:

    > Zach Tom was activated off the physically unable to perform list, which means he's recovered from the pec injury that sidelined him during the offseason program. However, he didn't participate in team drills.

    > Even without Tom, rookie first-rounder Jordan Morgan didn't practice with the starters from the get go, and veteran free agent addition Andre Dillard got the reps. This shouldn't surprise you, but Dillard had a tough day against Rashan Gary, who got at least two sacks. The starting offensive line had Rasheed Walker - Elgton Jenkins - Josh Myers - Sean Rhyan - Andre Dillard. Later on, Jenkins got some center reps as well.

    > Beyond Jordan Love, seven other Packers players didn't practice — all of them because of injury. Jayden Reed (toe), MarShawn Lloyd (hip), Corey Ballentine (hamstring), Caleb Jones (hamstring), Donovan Jennings (knee), Kitan Oladapo (toe), and Tucker Kraft (pec) were out. Oladapo is on the NFI list, and Kraft is on PUP — both can be activated at any time and aren't expected to be out for too long.

    > After being a backup during the offseason program, rookie safety Javon Bullard is now a starter alongside Xavier McKinney. The secondary had Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes in the boundary, Keisean Nixon in the slot, with McKinney and Bullard at safety.
