Jordan Love is holding in , so he is in Green Bay for training camp, but he won't effectively practice until a contract extension is done with the Packers. Both sides remain optimistic a deal will be reached soon, and ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter thinks they can agree to a new contract this week.

Schefter said that he expects Love to be among the highest-paid players in NFL history — if not breaking the record of highest average per year.

"They are trying to get this worked out. I think both sides think they can get it worked out. It's not done," Schefter said. "It could go either way still, but I think by the end of the week, my guess would be that Jordan Love will have a new contract that probably makes him one of the, if not the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history. They will be right there."

    Confidence

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said that both sides want the same thing. Previously, the executive had mentioned how important it would be to get a deal done before training camp, and now they want Love on the field as soon as possible.

"We completely understand where he's coming from," Gutekunst said on Monday. "Yeah, I think so (a deal will get done), but again, you never know. We're working really hard to get that done. At the same time, the thing I have confidence in is we both want the same thing."

There are at least two signs pointing out to the fact that the Packers believe a deal is close. First, they reached an extension with defensive tackle Kenny Clark . Then, they opted not to add a fourth quarterback to the roster — Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt will split reps.

"Obviously, we're hopeful we'll get something done here sooner than later," head coach Matt LaFleur said. "But that's something that we're going to have to just adjust on the fly."

Sean Clifford, last year's fifth-round pick, took the first-team reps on the first day of practice. After the activities, Clifford said he doesn't think it's going to take "super long," and Jordan Love being in Wisconsin makes things easier and clearer.

    Market

Jordan Love is most likely getting more than $50 million a year — perhaps well above that. Last month, the Jacksonville Jaguars agreed to pay Trevor Lawrence $55 million in yearly average, tying Joe Burrow from the Cincinnati Bengals as the highest-paid quarterback in football.
