Still without Jordan Love at practice, Packers sign QB Jacob Eason

In need of another quarterback at training camp while Jordan Love negotiates his new contract, the Green Bay Packers signed 2020 draft pick Jacob Eason on Tuesday, according to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. The corresponding roster move was releasing rookie long snapper Peter Bowden.

Eason, 26, worked out for the Packers last summer and was in Green Bay during the team’s rookie minicamp in May.

For the time being, Eason — who is on the practice field on Tuesday — will operate as the No. 3 quarterback behind Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt at Packers training camp.

Love is negotiating a new contract with the Packers and has decided to skip practices — while attending all other team functions — to eliminate the risk of injury until the new deal is done.

If nothing else, Eason now has an opportunity — however short — to show the Packers he belongs.

The Indianapolis Colts made Eason the 122nd overall pick in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He has played for five NFL teams. Most recently, Eason was with the New York Giants to end the 2023 season.

Eason has played in two NFL games: One with the Colts in 2021 and one with the Giants in 2023. He’s thrown 10 passes in a regular season game, completing five for 84 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

It’s unclear if the Packers would keep four active quarterbacks on the 90-man roster. Eason could be released once Love’s contract is done.
