Analyst offers intriguing insight about what the Packers could do at QB

No Jordan Love, no offensive success. Most NFL teams won't get great results if their starting quarterback goes down, to be fair, but the Green Bay Packers offense has been tough to watch over the first few days of training camp.

Love is holding-in as part of his attempt to get a contract extension done , so backups Sean Clifford, Michael Pratt, and recently signed Jacob Eason have shared the snaps.

Andy Herman, who does a great job covering the Packers for Pack A Day Podcast and Packer Report, was there and has a concerning perception about the quarterback play while Love isn't practicing.

    Solution

The Packers will likely carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. If both Clifford and Pratt fail to operate the offense adequately, general manager Brian Gutekunst could waive one of them, add a veteran like Ryan Tannehill, and keep the other young piece — probably Pratt, who has one extra year under a cheap deal — to develop.

Tannehill makes a lot of sense because he has familiarity with Matt LaFleur's offensive scheme. They didn't cross paths for the Tennessee Titans, because Tannehill was acquired one year after LaFleur had been the team's offensive coordinator. However, Arthur Smith kept several concepts and aspects of the language when he took over in 2019.

    Cost

Right now, the Packers have $29.25 million in available cap space. Some of that will be used to give Jordan Love his extension, but Green Bay would still have enough room to add the veteran quarterback.

Earlier this year, A to Z Sports projected that Tannehill would get a $13.5 million deal in free agency. However, at this point of the calendar, it's fair to wonder if the quarterback wouldn't accept a cheaper contract.

For the most part, teams are set at quarterback for training camp and with their budgets. Except for an eventual injury from a starter, it's difficult to imagine any team giving Tannehill a top backup QB contract.

Ryan Tannehill is 35 and wouldn't be a long-term solution, especially coming off the worst season of his career. Last year, he started eight games for the Titans, throwing four touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Nonetheless, he is experienced and has proven to be a capable passer.

It's too early in training camp, and offenses usually take some time to stack solid practices. Anyway, the quality of the backup quarterback play will be something to watch over the next month. Clifford and Pratt are young, but they haven't done enough so far to secure a spot on the roster.
