Thomas Laehn is the Greene County attorney. Our nation’s two major parties are failing us. It is evident that the likely Republican and Democratic nominees for the presidency are both unfit for the office. One lacks character, displays despotic tendencies, and has previously called for the termination of constitutional provisions that stand in the way of his return to power; the other has now shown that he lacks the mental acuity necessary for the office.
Tomorrow’s Schedule at the Greene County Fair Includes New Little Miss and Mister Royalty Contest
Tomorrow picks up more steam with activities and shows at the Greene County Fair in Jefferson. The livestock and animal shows include the poultry show in the show ring at 1pm and the dog obedience and showmanship show at 3pm at the gazebo. Greene County Fair Board Vice President Katlynn Mechaelsen says during the fair queen contest tomorrow night at 7pm at Clover Hall is going to be a new event with the Little Miss and Mister Royalty. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio any five through seven year olds can register from 5-6:30pm tomorrow with a $10 entry fee per child.
Youthful softball Rams look to spring upset
Thursday night the Greene County High School softball team will meet PCM for the third time this season, and for the second time in Monroe. The Mustangs were 20-3 entering this week and they are the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference champions and have won the first two meetings from the Rams. The teams will play in the opening round of Class 3A regional play with the winner advancing to a semifinal on Saturday night and the losing team having its season come to an end.
Greene County district court, week ending July 5
In Greene County district court Tracy William McDonald, 48, of Jefferson was sentenced July 3 on three counts of theft- third degree. On each count he was sentenced to a term not to exceed two years in prison, with each of the prison terms suspended. He was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Corrections for two years. He was fined $855 with a $128.25 surcharge on each count, with the fines and surcharges all suspended. He must pay $889.04 victim restitution on one count, with restitution to be determined on the other two counts. Two other counts of theft- third degree were dismissed, as well as one count of ongoing criminal conduct. Court costs were $147.06. (Sentencing: Honorable Derek Johnson)
Reminder: Free Concert Tomorrow at Greene County High School Auditorium
A reminder that a free concert is being held tomorrow in Jefferson. The Brown Family is from LeMars, Iowa and the award winning ensemble is going to perform a free show at the Greene County High School auditorium Sunday at 2pm. The show will be the “Americana Music and Patriotic Salute.” The event is sponsored by the Greene County Veterans Affairs Office and the Greene County Veterans Commission.
Community Players of Greene County Announces Meetings for Upcoming August Production
The Community Players of Greene County invites the public to perform in its upcoming show. Director Josh Tuel says the 2nd Annual Community Players Radio Show is planned for August. He explains that the characters will be reading from scripts to mimic what old-fashioned radio programs would have sounded like. He points out there is no memorization required and limited rehearsal time. A few of the selections for this year’s production includes. “Fibber McGee and Molly,” “The Bickerson’s,” and “Abbott and Costello’s Who’s on First.”
NEW Cooperative Donates to Greene Co Extension, Churdan Fire and Rescue
An agricultural company recently gave some donations to two Greene County organizations. Greene County ISU Extension received $3,700 from the NEW Cooperative Foundation to be used for 4-H enrollment fees. Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Samantha Hardaway says NEW Cooperative gave $20 per 4-H’er toward enrollment fees, while the other sponsors each gave $5 per 4-H’er, including Doug Hawn, Greene County Environmental Habitat Corporation and Greene County Corn Growers.
Well-Known Music Group, The Brown Family, to Perform in Jefferson Sunday
A free concert with a well-known traveling family band is coming to Jefferson on Sunday. The Brown Family is from LeMars, Iowa and the award winning ensemble is going to perform a free show at the Greene County High School auditorium Sunday at 2pm. The show will be the “Americana Music and Patriotic Salute.” The event is sponsored by the Greene County Veterans Affairs Office and the Greene County Veterans Commission, which received a $10,000 grant from the local allocation from the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, that is used for outreach events and training, as well as operational expenses for the county veterans affairs offices.

New Multicultural Family Resource Center Director Weighs In on Injunction Against New State Illegal Immigration Law
A new Iowa law was supposed to be in effect back on July 1st, but a federal judge has blocked that start of it. Senate File 2340 that was signed by Governor Kim Reynolds in April, after the legislation passed both the House and Senate, would allow law enforcement in Iowa to criminally charge an undocumented individual who illegally re-entered Iowa and could deport them. However, in June a federal judge put an injunction in place and sources say that it was because the federal immigration laws have jurisdiction, not state and local governments.
Register for Orientation for a Free High School Equivalency Diploma at Greene County Career Academy
There is an opportunity in Jefferson for adults who are looking to get their high school diploma. The Greene County Career Academy has several classes for individuals to earn their High School Equivalency Diploma for free. The next orientation is scheduled for Monday at 4pm at the Career Academy. The classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6pm and are taught by Iowa Central Community College. Attendees are asked to use the north parking lot and enter through door N5. These classes are for people who are 17 and older.
