Frances Roberta “Bobbi” Watton
Frances Roberta “Bobbi” Watton (85), passed away on June 27, 2024. On June 7, 1957, she married her beloved husband, Larry Lorain Watton, who preceded her in death on June 14, 2022. She is survived by her sons Jeffery (Aleta) Watton of Michigan, Mark (Late, Brenda) Watton of Covington, his daughters Lisa (Bill) Speier of Falmouth, and Kimberly (Kenny) Johantges of Florence, eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Bobbi was dedicated to Christ and it showed in how she lived her life and treated everyone who encountered her. She retired from Colonial Heights and Gardens after 27 years. Online condolences expressed at www.alliancefuneralhome.net. A celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date.
Lumberjack Days returning to Baraga
The 2024 Baraga County Lumberjack Days will be returning Wednesday and Thursday. The fun-filled schedule includes a street dance, pancake breakfast, children’s parade, games and a bean bag tournament. MSP looking for juvenile runaway, last seen in Bruce Crossing
ALGER COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post are looking for a juvenile who ran away from their residence on Friday evening. The juvenile is 17-year-old female, Jozelyn Gabrielle Warmack. She is described as 5’9″, 170 lbs, and having brown hair and hazel eyes. She has both ear and nose piercings, along with two tattoos above her knee on her thighs and one tattoo on her chest. It is unknown what she was wearing at the time she ran away.
Camp 911 a success
Camp 911 teams ran the show, as the kids ran circles around them during the two-day event June 19 and 20 at the Baraga Village office. Gary Wadaga, director of Bay ambulance, kept the show going. Volunteers shared their expertise and talents. With the precision of a finely tuned clock, events continued throughout the two days of entertainment and information. The first day of Camp 911 featured lectures, videos and demonstrations which included The Jaws of Life. Members of the police department, fire department and ambulance were on hand. South Range celebration is Copper Country tradition
SOUTH RANGE — The village of South Range has another great Fourth of July celebration planned for this year which, as always, promises to be a traditional event. Activities include a flag raising and Flag Pole Dedication to Veterans, horseshoe and cornhole tournaments, live music, an Old Photo Gallery, children’s races and more. In fact, with some 17 events and activities scheduled, there are too many to list in this limited space.
KBIC youth work to prevent wildfires
BARAGA, Mich. (WLUC) - Young members of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community are working together this summer. Their goal is to prevent wildfires. The eight-member KBIC Fire Management Youth Crew practiced teamwork while promoting fire safety at the Ojibwa Campground on Tuesday. Crew Member Landon Smith said he liked helping out the community so much last year, he decided to participate again this summer.
Camp 911 gives area kids a chance learn safety skills
BARAGA — The 24th Annual Camp 911 was hosted outside of the Village Office of Baraga on Wednesday and Thursday, with the attendance of over 20 children from various schools of Baraga County. The camp is held each year to educate students on safety skills and entice them into joining first responders careers and volunteerism for their local communities through various activities. Scientific and mathematical skills were utilized in the activities the children participated in which were all hands on experiences. The safety skills included injury and illness prevention, CPR and First Aid, and bleeding prevention.
L’Anse native making waves in the Navy
The Dix family is making waves in the best of ways, and it all started with David and Beth Dix. Jordan Dix is the oldest of 7 children and his mother said, “He (Jordan) paved the way for his siblings and was a great role model for them.” In the 7th grade, Jordan announced his desire to get into the Naval Academy. He knew getting good grades was important.
L'Anse man faces federal sexual abuse charges
L'Anse, MI - A L’Anse man has been indicted in federal court on sexual abuse charges. 56-year-old Michael Dowd of the L’Anse Indian Reservation was charged by a federal grand jury this week with ‘sexual abuse’ and ‘aggravated sexual abuse.’ The indictment alleges that between April-8th and 9th of this year, Dowd used his body to hold the victim down and performed a sexual act on the victim. It further alleges that Dowd “knowingly engaged in a sexual act” without the victim’s consent and while the victim was “incapable of appraising the nature of the conduct and physically incapable of declining participation in, or communicating unwillingness to engage in,” the act. The case was investigated by the Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police and the FBI. Officials continue to investigate Dowd for sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact. Anyone who has not previously provided information about conduct involving Dowd should contact the FBI or U-S Attorney’s Office in Marquette at 906-226-2500.

BIG BAY, MI- Marilyn Jean Gauthier, beloved wife, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, passed away Sunday June 9th, 2024, at 90 years old. Born Marilyn Jean Homier on May 14th, 1934, in L’anse, Michigan, to Edward and Muriel Homier, she was raised in L’anse, Michigan, graduating in 1952.
