The final week of the 2024 PGA Tour regular season has arrived, with one last opportunity for players to get into the top 70 of the FedExCup standings before the first leg of the playoffs. The 2024 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, serves as the season finale and has been a staple on Tour since 1938 (previously called the Greater Greensboro Open).

Most players that have already secured their spot into next week's FedEx St. Jude's Championship elected to skip out on the Wyndham Championship, leaving the 156-player field a bit lackluster. Only seven of the top 30 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are teeing it up this week — Brian Harman, Robert MacIntyre, Sungjae Im, Keegan Bradley, Cameron Young, Akshay Bhatia, and Shane Lowry. Billy Horschel, Min Woo Lee, Justin Rose, Will Zalatoris, and past champions Si Woo Kim, J.T. Poston, and Lucas Glover also made the trip to Greensboro.

Heading into this week, Nick Dunlap, Jhonattan Vegas, Emiliano Grillo, Seamus Power, Brendon Todd, and Victor Perez hold the final five playoff spots (Nos. 65-70) in the FedExCup Standings. Davis Riley, Andrew Putnam, Kurt Kitayama, Luke List, and Lucas Glover are the first five players on the outside looking in (Nos. 71-75), hoping for a high-end result to vault into the top 70. Lee Hodges (No. 76), Keith Mitchell (No. 78), Charley Hoffman (No. 85), Beau Hossler (No. 87), Ryan Fox (No. 100), Rickie Fowler (No. 102), and Matt Kuchar (No. 111) are some other notables looking to sneak into the first leg of the postseason.

    Course History/Comp Courses

    THE COURSE

Sedgefield Country Club (par 70) is a classical Carolina golf course designed by Donald Ross that opened in 1926. The course underwent a hefty $3 million renovation led by Kris Spence in 2007 to accommodate modern PGA Tour players/technology and now stretches 7,131 yards.

Despite being one of the shortest tracks on the PGA Tour, Sedgefield features tight tree-lined fairways (29 yards wide on average), 2.5-inch Bermudagrass rough, unpredictable pine straw, 51 sand bunkers, six holes with water hazards, shaved greenside run-off areas, and severely undulated Champion Bermuda green complexes. The course's length isn't daunting, but there are many ways to get out of position and fail at racking up birdies.

Similar to other positional courses like Harbour Town Golf Links (RBC Heritage), TPC Sawgrass (PLAYERS Championship), and TPC River Highlands (Travelers Championship), accuracy trumps distance at Sedgefield CC. With a list of past winners including Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner, Jim Herman, and J.T. Poston, it's pretty clear that driving distance doesn't matter on this course. Playing from the fairway and staying steady from tee to green is far more crucial this week.

The 156-player field faces a par-70 layout, meaning there are 12 par-4s, four par-3s, and only two par-5s on the course.

Among the 12 par-4s, only three (Nos. 11, 14, and 18) stretch longer than 450 yards. Eight par-4s range between 400-450 yards, meaning players frequently will hit wedges or short irons into the greens on these holes. It's also worth noting the front nine par-4s are much easier than the back nine, with the longest being the 442-yard 2nd hole.

Two of the four par-3s reach well over 200 yards -- the 223-yard 7th hole and 235-yard 12th hole. However, the other two par-3s (Nos. 3 & 16) are each shorter than 180 yards. It's a mixed basket at Sedgefield.

Both par-5s are shorter than 550 yards, which is a rarity on Tour in today's age. The 529-yard 5th hole annually plays as the easiest hole on the course, while the 545-yard 15th also offers up a ton of birdies. Reaching the green in two shots won't be an issue, and I expect to see plenty of eagles this week.

While we're still three days removed from the tournament beginning, it's worth mentioning the forecast for the week is looking less than ideal. There's currently a 90 percent chance of precipitation on both Thursday and Friday, plus, a 40 percent chance on Saturday. Winds are expected to gust up to 20 miles per hour all four days, which could lead to more difficult course conditions than usual at Sedgefield. If the forecast plays out as expected, I'll put even more weight into accuracy from tee to green and rate bogey avoidance a little bit higher.

All in all, I'll target players who consistently hit the fairway, tear up short par-4s, are strong with their wedges/short irons, and can get hot with the flat stick on firm Bermuda putting surfaces. Generating as many birdie opportunities as possible is the name of the game at Sedgefield, with the winning score reaching at least 20-under in seven of the past eight years. Additionally, it's worth looking at who consistently plays well in birdie fests on other short golf courses featured on the PGA Tour.
