Campbell made an initial appearance at the district court in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, about 31 miles from Pittsburgh, on Thursday.

    WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR…

    • Troopers were called to James C. Campbell’s house in Donegal Township, Pennsylvania, at 6 am on Thursday
    • The body of Hunter Meyers, 10, was found in an upstairs bedroom
    • He had multiple stab wounds to the head
    • Campbell, 13, was found with lacerations to his right hand
    • Meyers was an overnight guest at Campbell’s house
    • Bond has been denied for the teen at his arraignment hearing
    • Campbell will next appear at the district court in Greensburg on August 9

Photos of him entering the building showed him wearing blue scrubs, and with bare feet for his arraignment.

“At this point, I’m denying bond,” said District Judge Jason Buczak.

“OK,” Campbell replied. He asked for a public defender.

The teen appeared before the judge about 11 hours after state police said they were notified of Meyers’ death.

    It’s a tragedy.

    Trooper Steve Limani

The court was told that he and Meyers were acquaintances.

The hearing was told that Meyers had been staying at the home where the stabbing was alleged to have taken place, but did not live there.

Troopers were called to the suspect’s house at 6 am, and discovered the 10-year-old’s body in an upstairs bedroom.

    KNIFE FOUND

Court papers said troopers found a knife lying next to the dead boy, and he had suffered multiple stab wounds to the head.

An autopsy was being undertaken yesterday afternoon.

Police said in court documents that Campbell had multiple cuts on his right hand.

Statement from Pennsylvania State Police, Westmoreland

James C. Campbell, 13, is accused of fatally stabbing Hunter Meyers, 10

“It’s very difficult to investigate any loss of life, and our sympathies and our deepest regards go out to the family of the young boy that was killed,” said Trooper Steve Limani.

    “It’s a tragedy.

“Right now, I think we have two families that, basically, one lost their loved one, another one is incarcerated and there’s a lot of ‘why would this happen?’

“And I know that the general population might want to know why, but we really don’t have a definitive ‘why’ that we’re able to give you right now.”

He allegedly confessed to the fatal stabbing while being interviewed by state police, according to filings.

Trooper Steve Limani said that Meyers lived near Campbell’s home, and had been staying overnight.

“It’s very difficult to investigate any loss of life, and our sympathies and our deepest regards go out to the family of the young boy that was killed,” Limani said.

    “It’s a tragedy.”

    QUIET AREA

It is not known what the motive is, as yet, the court was told.

The friends were enrolled in Agora Cyber Charter School, said Mt. Pleasant Area School District Superintendent Tim Gabauer.

Mark Harman, a neighbor, told Live that it was a quiet area.

“For something like that to happen … it’s very uncommon to happen here – that just floored me.”

A preliminary hearing has been set for August 9.

    MOM’S PLEA

The dead boy’s mom, Dorothy, has expressed her shock and grief at the devastating news.

She asked for space as the family “tries to come to terms with it.”

Dorothy also requested on Facebook that people “don’t go after the other child with any hate.”

“He is a child also… he’s being charged as an adult, with criminal homicide and 1st degree murder,” she added.

“If I… can ask for compassion for the other child involved then people can show it.”

A GoFundMe fundraiser has already secured more than $14,000 in donations for Meyers’ family.

“Keith and his family tragically lost their ten year old son Hunter,” the page said.

“Anything will help the family with the expenses during this terrible loss.”
