‘Jaws’-dropping encounter! 7-foot shark swims past LI lifeguard on surfboard, prompts beach closure
It was a “Jaws”-dropping encounter. A 7-foot shark swam uncomfortably close to a Long Island lifeguard paddling just off the shore of Lido Beach on Monday afternoon, forcing the temporary closure of the sandy stretch, local authorities say. The lifeguard remained calm as a shark’s signature fin surfaced a few feet from his board about 30 yards from shore, said Don Clavin, supervisor of Hempstead. The toothy beast then swam past the guard without incident, but the 5 p.m. sighting still prompted Lido lifeguards to whistle bathers in from the water and close the beach for roughly an hour. Police Conducting Search for Suspects Who Broke into Locust Valley Gas Station, Made Off with Cash & Cigarettes
The Second Squad reports the details of a Burglary that occurred on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at 3:47 am in Locust Valley. According to Detectives, Second Precinct Officers responded to Citgo Gas Station, located at 320 Forest Avenue for a Commercial Burglary. Upon arrival, it was determined that an unknown subject smashed the front window and entered the store. Further investigation revealed that an undetermined amount of US currency and cigarettes had been removed from the store. The subject left the scene in an unknown direction.
Governor Hochul Announces Double-Digit Declines in Shooting Incidents, Overall Reported Crime on Long Island
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced continued progress in bringing down gun violence and overall crime on Long Island. Shooting incidents with injury decreased 44 percent as reported by the Nassau, Suffolk and Hempstead Police Departments, which all participate in the State's Gun Involved Violence Elimination program. Across Long Island, statistics show a 15 percent overall decrease in index crimes, as well as a 16 percent reduction in property crimes, during the first quarter of 2024. Governor Hochul also announced the investment of more than $50 million for public safety in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the largest such State investment in history, which was included in this year's State Budget.
