    Thomas McBride Newton, Sr.

    Thomas McBride Newton, Sr., a resident of Greenville, passed away on Monday, June 10, at the age of 88.

    Funeral Services were held on Thursday, June 13, beginning at 3 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church with Reverend Herbert Brown officiating and Dunklin Funeral Home directing.  Burial followed in Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends for visitation beginning at 2 p.m. until service time.

    Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Dollie Newton; sister, Kathryn Head; brother, Douglas Newton; sister-in-law, Ann Ridley Newton and brother-in-law, Charles Head.

    He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Newton; children, Peytie Cole (Jimmy), Nancy Hartley (Greg) and Mac Newton; grandchildren, Haley Cole, Phillip Cole (Brook Tegenkamp), Garrett Hartley (Anna Logan), Taylor Hartley, Aubrey Newton and Kellan Newton; sister, Betty Taylor (Johnny); brothers, Eddie Newton, Jimmy Newton (Jeanette) and sister-in-law, Glenda Newton, along with many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

    Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a long-time member of Southside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and director, and various other positions through the years. Tom was a 1954 alumnus of Greenville High School and enjoyed attending his class reunions and fellowshipping with his classmates.  He also enjoyed gardening in his vegetable patch. Tom will always be remembered as someone who loved to laugh and loved to talk to anyone who would listen.

    Serving as pallbearers are Phillip Cole, Garrett Hartley, Taylor Hartley, Ed Head, Keith Morgan, Russell Newton, Randall Petty and Jimmy Pierce.

    Honorary pallbearers include Bernard Bedgood, Billy Don Black, Ronnie Miller, Bobby Phelps, Roy Scott and Dickie Stevens.

    Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, ℅ Angie Kidd, 121 Smothers Drive, Greenville, AL 36037.
