GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Starting next school year, all Pitt County Schools will have Narcan in them.

Narcan treats overdoses in emergencies. The board unanimously approved the policy Wednesday morning in a special called meeting. The school system has staff in each school who are first responders. Those staff members are working with school nurses to train on how and when to use Narcan.

“It’s something that we know is a prevalent issue in the community at large and it’s something that we want to make sure is on hand in the event of an emergency. I think naloxone is becoming a more routine part of first aid and emergency aid kits. And so we just want to make sure that it’s part of our of our school system,” said Emma Hodson, Pitt County Schools Board Attorney.

Pitt County Schools is working with the county health department to supply the Narcan.
