The Greenville Police Department recently charged a man under a new statute regulating motor vehicle operations that went into effect Dec. 1.
Izarion Blango, 23, was charged with reckless driving to endanger and street takeover on June 22 when he was spotted in his vehicle doing doughnuts, drifting and performing other driving stunts in the parking lot of Buyer’s Market Shopping Center while others were recording the activity, the department said.
Street takeover is the unauthorized taking over of a portion of a highway, street or public vehicular area by blocking or impeding the regular flow of traffic with a motor vehicle to perform a motor vehicle stunt, contest or exhibition, according to the statute, NCGS 20-141.10.
Prior to the incident, officers observed a car club gathering at 8 p.m. in the parking lot, located at 2400 S. Memorial Drive, south of Dickinson Avenue. The statute also defines burnouts, doughnuts, drifting, stunts and wheelies and prohibits street takeover.
It says it is unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle in a street takeover and says anyone who knowingly violates the subsection is guilty of a Class A1 misdemeanor subject to a $1,000 fine with higher penalties for subsequent violations. It also says the vehicle can be seized.
The statute says it is unlawful to “knowingly participate in, coordinate through social media or otherwise, commit an overt act in furtherance of, or facilitate a street takeover.”
Blango was jailed at the Pitt County Detention Center in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
