The Pitt County Girls Softball League is going back to Elm Street Park this summer, and it’s not just a casual visit.

The PCGSL 12U team won its state championship tournament that began over the weekend and earned another trip to the Little League Softball World Series, where last year the team battled to the championship game.

Pitt knocked off Johnston County in a convincing 15-0 shutout on Tuesday night to claim the state crown and nail down an automatic berth into the LLSWS, which begins in August inside Stallings Stadium.

The North Carolina Region representative is scheduled to open play against the Asia-Pacific Region squad at 7 p.m. on Aug. 4.

On its way to the state title, Pitt also eliminated a familiar foe and perennial powerhouse in Rowan County in a 6-1 decision on Sunday. That win came on the heels of a victory against Rutherford County on Saturday.

The teams in the championship game were forced to wait out a lightning delay at North Mecklenburg Park in Huntersville, but PCGSL already led 7-0 at the time.

This will be the fourth LLSWS staged in Greenville, and in the spring the city extended its deal with Little League to host through at least 2027.

The PCGSL 12s charged to the title game last August before, amid sweltering heat, they fell in the title game to the Mid-Atlantic representative from Massapequa, N.Y.

The 5-2 loss was the second at the tournament for Pitt, which dropped its LLSWS opener before eliminating teams from the Philippines, Ohio, North Carolina (Rowan) and defending champion Texas to earn a spot in the title game.

Prior to that, Pitt was forced to win its way through the Southeast Regional in Warner Robins, Ga.

The LLSWS championship game, broadcast nationally on ABC, was the second-most watched LLSWS final in history.
