GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – This week’s high school standout is a tri-sport athlete who has proven to be successful in all three sports on top of maintaining a 4.9 GPA, with AP and Honors credits.

Miah Johnson, a graduating senior from Riverside High School, has already signed with Kennesaw State University to continue her career in both cross country and track and field.

After moving from California following her freshman year, Johnson immediately made an impact at her new high school. Throughout her career at Riverside, she won two track and field State Championships, three cross country All-State honors, and a State Championship in basketball. Additionally, Johnson was named the Riverside Female Athlete of the Year in both 2023 and 2024.

“It’s really special to me just because we moved out here no too long ago and I was really nervous about coming onto a new team and, ‘am I going to be good enough for this team, how am I going to do here,’ but I think achieving what I did and being able to leave that for my younger teammates to kind of follow through with and look up to is really special,” Johnson said.

Along with her competitive accolades, Johnson has also thrived as a leader. She served as the team captain for both cross country (2022, 2023) and track and field (2022-2024) while also winning the Warrior Leadership Award for the Riverside basketball team.

“I had a lot of really good team captains my freshman year, especially on my cross country and track team, and I ran with a lot of the seniors on my old high school team,” said Johnson. “I feel like they kind of influenced me to take on those leadership roles.”

Maybe Johnson’s most outstanding accomplishment came this month at the 27th annual AAU Club Championships in Jacksonville, where Johnson helped the Iron Sharpens Iron Track team crush a 27-year-old AAU Club Championships record.

Johnson and her teammates (Allison Reese, Krista Silletti, and Teresa Shepard) won the 4×800 Meter Relay with a time of 9:34.79, beating the record by nearly four seconds.

“We were all really focused on this relay. We were like we’re coming down here just to break this record, just to win,” said Johnson. “I think that being my last high school race and being able to go out with the record and just winning and being able to do that with my teammates was really cool.”

Johnson will look to continue her success at the collegiate level, but her talent and leadership should help make the transition a little easier.

“She is the hardest working athlete, has such good self-motivation and self-direction and so just giving her a workout I know she’s going to put 100% into it. She’s such a leader that she helps push the other athletes,” said Johnson’s mother and coach. “I’m excited to be able to continue watch her compete.”
