All roads of travel clear after train derails in Gregory Monday afternoon

UPDATE: June 11, 2024; 11:07 a.m.

According to the Gregory Volunteer Fire Department, the Mayor of Gregory is ending a mandatory evacuation for residents and they may begin returning to their homes.

Union Pacific was on-site in Gregory to work on putting the cars back upright and moving them to another location.

"Residents in the evacuation area are asked to remain elsewhere while crews are working out of caution. The work will continue into the night, and there will be noise and equipment in the area while work proceeds. We commend all the groups working together today. No injuries have been reported, and state-local partners continue to coordinate," said a social media post from the Gregory Volunteer Fire Department.

Officials say all roadways leading to Gregory are now open, including U.S. Highway 181, TX 35, and Spur Loop 202 ("Fourth Street").

Norma Garcia, the city secretary in Gregory, said two families went to the shelter in Gregory, although no one stayed overnight.

The Mayor of Gregory has issued a mandatory evacuation of the Havens and Glades Apartments and the 600 blocks of 3rd, 2nd, Mission, Franklin, and North streets for a Hazardous Materials Emergency. The shelter is set up at First Baptist Portland and Gregory Housing Authority for residents needing shelter.

ORIGINAL: June 10, 2024; 3:50 p.m.

A train derailment happened this morning at Fourth Street and the Highway 181 overpass on the northwest side of Gregory.

The San Patricio County Sheriff's Office says four tanker cars derailed beneath the overpass around 12:34 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Sheriff Oscar Rivera says the tankers were carrying a flammable chemical; however, there is no word of any leaks.

No injuries were reported, and there were no evacuations required, according to officials.

Several roads in the area had to be shut down as emergency crews assessed the damages.
