It takes a lot for a new taco restaurant to impress in metro Phoenix. As you can walk out your front door, turn any direction, and stumble on some kind of establishment hawking tacos within just a few minutes, sub-par doesn’t cut it in the Valley. Even so, it normally takes years for any new eatery to carve a name out for itself in the crowded field of Mexican cuisine. However, one particular restaurant that opened less than two months ago is already turning heads, as it has generated exceptional buzz, all with very little marketing other than its social media profile. So, if you’ve been looking to check out a new taco spot around greater Phoenix, Taco Vida might be the spot for you.

Roughly six weeks ago, the soft opening of Taco Viva took place. Located at 2815 East Indian School Road in Phoenix, the restaurant relied on word of mouth and, mostly, its Instagram page. And yet, in just six weeks Taco Viva has accumulated around 6,500 followers as well as nearly 150 Google reviews. There are restaurants around town that have been open for several years and don’t have this kind of social proof. With a 4.7 rating on Google and a 4.8 on Yelp, visitors to the restaurant have quickly fallen in love with the all-new, family-owned Mexican restaurant.

The taqueria restaurant specializes in all things tacos, quesadillas, mulas, vampiros, and others. If you’re not totally sure what a vampiro taco is don’t worry. It is made using a soft tortilla that is tossed on a grill until it begins to crack and turn crunchy. It’s not yet a hard shell, but instead, it still has a bit of flexibility to it while having some crunch. A layer of cheese is added to the tortilla, kind of as an edible mortar to hold the tortilla together, and then the rest of the toppings are added. Vampiros can be consumed on their own, or by dipping it into your favorite salsa.

Beyond tacos, tostadas, vampiros, quesadillas, and extras (like chips and salsa, guac, or queso), you can also order homemade fries, which come topped with grilled steak, spicy pork, chicken, or grilled mushrooms.

If you are hungry and want to check out Taco Viva, it is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 AM until 9 PM, and on Friday and Saturday from 11 AM until 10 PM.
