Last week, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) asked for the public’s help because of a “severe space challenge” caused by a surge in dogs and cats arriving at its shelters. Over the weekend, it offered a special discount rate on adoptions of all dogs and cats six months or older, and 135 pets were adopted. Unfortunately, the space problem still exists, because while those adoptions were happening, 132 more pets arrived at ARL.

After the Cowles family bought the Des Moines Register and Leader in 1903, their editors initiatied several innovations that proved immensely popular with readers. Among them was a daily front-page editorial cartoon, and J.N. "Ding" Darling was hired to provide it. His "In Good Old USA," published on May 6, 1923, earned the Register the first of its many Pulitzer Prizes. With the Register on and off until his retirement in 1949, he would win another Pulitzer for the paper in 1943.

Perry Parks & Rec Hiring Lifeguards for the Summer
The Perry Parks and Recreation is looking for volunteers to help with the pool this summer. The organization is asking for employees to be part time lifeguards. The Perry Parks & Rec outlines that participants must be at least 15 years old by July 31st, and have to pass a swim test. The test consists of 300 meters of either freestyle or breaststroke, being able to tread water for two minutes, and a brick retrieval.

New habitats for amphibians, reptiles and insects unveiled at Blank Park Zoo
DES MOINES, Iowa — Blank Park Zoo has a new exhibit full of reptiles, amphibians, and insects!. It's at the Jackie Blank Discovery Center. Some of the new animals include a Jamaican Boa, an axolotl, and poison dart frogs. The new animal habitats in the Discovery Center were funded through the 2023 #GivingTuesday campaign.
