Jim Thorpe appointed to Michigan Association of School Boards position
DEARBORN, Mich (FOX 2) - Dearborn Public School Trustee Jim Thorpe has been appointed to help govern a statewide organization for school board members. The Michigan Association of School Boards appointed Trustee Thorpe to its Board of Governors as a representative for District 8. His fellow trustees on the Dearborn Public Schools Board of Education had voted at the May meeting to recommend him for the position.
2 Wayne County community colleges allow culinary students to transfer credits
DETROIT – The Wayne County Community College District is teaming up with Schoolcraft College to allow the transfer of credits related to studies in culinary arts. The colleges on Monday, July 1 announced a new agreement that will help culinary arts students begin studying at WCCCD and transition to Schoolcraft for the remainder of their studies. The program is scheduled to start in the fall with 15 students, officials said.
Michigan public universities blame tuition hikes on higher costs, less funding
Tuition hikes of 4% or more are the standard for the coming academic year for most public universities in Michigan. In announcing the increases over the last few weeks, schools across the state pointed to a variety of reasons for their decisions, including declining enrollment, rising costs of salaries, goods and services and the continued need for investments in areas including campus safety and mental health resources — along with historic drops in state funding.

Wayne County man honored as Distinguished Alumnus from Northern Michigan University
A retired Allen Park Police Detective who still lives in Wayne County, was honored as one of six Distinguished Alumni from Northern Michigan University for 2024. Jim Thorburn, who spent 27.5 years with the Allen Park Police Department, before starting a consulting firm to teach other public information officers how to best deal with the media, is the only local honoree this year.
