Brattleboro police are investigating a death. Saturday morning, just before 9, they were called for a report of a person in the water. A male was found dead in the Whetstone Brook, where it passes under Main St. The road was closed to traffic for several hours as Brattleboro Fire Department assisted in recovering the body. Police say the death is not considered suspicious at this time, but they are still investigating. They are holding off on releasing his identity until the family can be notified.

On Monday morning of August 26, 2024, troopers from the Shaftsbury Barracks were alerted to a vehicle over an embankment on Tunnel Street in Whitingham, identified as Harold Lavanway’s 2011 Honda Civic. Upon arrival, they confirmed Mr. Lavanway was deceased inside the vehicle. Preliminary investigations indicate he was traveling northbound when he lost control on a left curve, veering off the shoulder and resting approximately 10 feet down the embankment. The exact time of the crash is unknown. Mr. Lavanway’s body will be sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy. Authorities request that anyone with information contact the Shaftsbury Barracks at 802-442-5421. The investigation is ongoing, with no further details available at this time.
Brattleboro man arrested on fugitive warrant for drug charges
BRATTLEBORO — Vermont State Police apprehended a Brattleboro man wanted on a fugitive warrant from Texas for possession of a controlled substance. Troopers encountered two individuals walking along Interstate 91 near Exit 3 on Aug. 25 at about 4:34 p.m. During the interaction, they identified Roland Ensminger, 44, as having an active, full extraditable warrant issued in Texas.
