I probably read about it at Granny's house, in Ebony or Jet magazine. Granny said "colored" when referring to Black people and I read that Shange used the term because her grandmother would understand. It is a way for any Black woman from the Baby Boom to the late '60s to understand. Ntozake Shange's choreopoem takes on the language of my childhood jump-rope songs and hand-play duets. For Colored Girls breathes life into the memories of Black women after riots, Vietnam, and Nixon set back the gains of the civil rights movement.
