    Guthrie teen counselor suspected of raping handicapped camper

    GUTHRIE ( KFOR ) – A teenage counselor is set to be arrested after being suspected of raping an adult camp counselor with severe mental and physical disabilities while they attended camp in Guthrie.

    The counselor and victim won’t be named but court documents detail the dark set of events that are alleged to have occurred.

    It was at Camp Twin Cedars on July 2nd and July 4th when the alleged rape happened.

    The camp is known to host “Make Promises Happen, ” a program of Central Oklahoma Camp and Conference Center dedicated to providing outdoor recreational opportunities for people ages six and up with any physical or intellectual disability.

    The document reports the victim was at camp from July 1st through July 5th. The victim told police that he was raped and sexually assaulted by the suspect.

    The victim is said to have several severe mental and physical disabilities.

    These alleged acts happened in the camp bathroom and shower on July 2nd and July 4th.

    A forensic interview was said to have happened on July 7th after the victim left camp.

    KFOR went to Twin Cedars at 1 Twin Cedars Lane in Guthrie and talked to Executive Director Jon Cunningham.

    He said that the board just wanted to release a statement:

    “We were notified this past weekend about an allegation involving a Twin Cedars counselor and adult camper. We take allegations of this sort extremely seriously, as the safety and wellbeing of our campers and counselors are always the utmost priority in everything we do. We utilize a multi-point vetting process for all volunteers working in our programs to ensure that all volunteers have been thoroughly vetted, in addition to extensive safety training. We are in full cooperation with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, and are conducting our own internal investigation.”

    “The people who employed him and promised safety to these very vulnerable people don’t keep their promise,” said Mark Hammons, attorney at Hammons, Hurst & Associates.

    Hammons has nothing to do with the case but has seen similar cases.

    The suspect has an affidavit for his arrest and a preliminary hearing in August.
