Between the Ears & Behind the Eyes

Our entire world - our sole reality resides there
Hi! I'm trying to project a new image. How's it working?Photo byH. Mikel Feilen
We rarely sit down and think about the who part of who we are. Our physical world overtakes our senses fooling us into believing the illusion we call life exists outside our mind.
By the way, this is not an opinion, it is a fact!
Your entire world and reality, my entire world and reality, and everyone else's conception of who they are is created inside our brains.
For example: The planet is not as full of color as one might think until light comes beaming in. It is the interpretation of light wavelengths inside the noggin that creates color. It also creates the shapes we see.
When our eyes receive refracted light off an object, the wavelength is sent to the back of the brain where it is deciphered into what we understand as color.
Not all animals see color the same as we do and we cannot see all the different rays of light with our naked eye that other animals can see, either. Simply put, the color we see is manmade!
It doesn't stop there! Our hearing is the translation of sound waves provided to us via the three amazing bones in our ears and our precious grey matter working in harmony.
The truth is, that the senses we have -
sight
hearing
taste
smell
touch
are processed, translated, and fed back to the appropriate areas of our being to create what we think we see, smell, taste, feel, and hear.
What is also a real kick in the shorts is that every piece of who we are resides within our minds.
A person can lose a finger or a limb and they are still the same person. Of course, you don't want to start losing too many important life-sustaining organs either. Which brings me to the most important part of who we are - our memories!
What's my name? Give me a second, I know this one!Photo byH. Mikel Feilen
"As a person ages their memory can slip a bit", as my mommy used to say about my Grandma. Now that I am as old as my grandma was back then I can appreciate and fully understand why mom said this about dear old and forgetful Granny.
The ugly truth is that anyone can get evicted from their Brain. Alzheimers and Dementia are awful diseases to watch as it methodically eats away at the person inside.
Unfortunately, I witnessed my mother-in-law (Pat), dwindle from a vibrant and exciting human being to a person who did not recognize herself in the mirror. Within one year I saw Pat become a body without a human being between the ears and behind the eyes.
She passed away at home with my wife and I, and I remember thinking that her body finally died. Pat had been gone for months. We were now holding her hand praying she was at peace.
Pat was 87 when she died and had a loving family with her to the end. God blessed her in that respect. However, it proves that our worlds reside inside our mind, interpreting everything we see, feel, taste, hear, and smell and wrapping it into what we call our life.
This means we are who we are as long as we can remember the memories that make us the person we call ourselves.
