HAGERSTOWN, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Residents in Hagerstown are taking Monday’s heat in stride, refusing to let the weather get in the way of their plans for the week.

At a senior high rise on West Baltimore Street, every resident has a strategy.

“I get out early and get shade,” said Bridgette. “And in the hot part of the day I just stay inside with my A/C.”

Bridgette’s friend, Shanda, recommended, “drink[ing] a lot of fluids and just stay out of the sun. That’s all.”

Amy at the senior center found the heat outside during breakfast hour to be bearable.

“Usually I’m inside underneath my A/C,” she said. “But it happens to be nice today so I’m just sitting in the shade.”

A few blocks from the senior center, at Hagerstown City Park, Festus and his young buddy decided to bike around the lake. His secret to staying cool?

“We carry bookbags when we ride with bottles of water,” said Festus. “Or else we just chill in the park and stay in the shade and stuff.”

But back at the senior center, Bridgette knows what it will take to get real relief.

“We need lots of rain,” she said.
