Taunton mayor appears in court on domestic assault charge
TAUNTON, Mass. (WJAR) — Taunton Mayor Shaunna O’Connell went before a judge Monday morning after she was arrested when her husband called police during a fight. She appeared in court briefly, and not guilty pleas were entered on her behalf on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and domestic assault and battery.

The recent release on $500 bail and subsequent flight of migrant Cory Alvarez, alleged to have raped a disabled child by force, highlights a little known but serious problem in our judicial system: when a judge is appointed to the court, he or she sits on both civil cases and criminal cases, whether or not they have ever had prior experience in the criminal arena.
