Area Student to Participate in Governor’s Charity Steer Show in August
The 42nd Governor’s Charity Steer Show will be held August 10th during the 2024 Iowa State Fair. The event, hosted by the Office of the Governor of Iowa, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council, helps raise money for the three independent Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City.
Luett pitches Underwood to second-straight State Tournament
(Glenwood) – For the fourth time in school history and second consecutive season, the Underwood Baseball team is heading to the State Tournament. The Class 2A No. 3 Eagles (27-2) got a memorable performance from sophomore Garrett Luett and cashed in enough runs to take down No. 9 Clarinda 3-0 Tuesday night in Glenwood. The win sends Underwood back to state after finishing as the runner-up last season.
Red Oak revs up for RAGBRAI
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak is making sure it's putting its best foot forward for RAGBRAI 51. Thousands of bicycle enthusiasts leave Glenwood Sunday, and peddle through Silver City, Henderson and Emerson before arriving in Red Oak for the first overnight stop. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Line" program Wednesday morning, Red Oak Mayor Shawnna Silvius pronounced her community ready for the onslaught of cyclists and visitors entering the community.

The eyes of the world are on Iowa as deep in the throes of the Cold War, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev makes a visit to tour its farms, claiming his nation will soon rival the state in corn production. The Register's sister afternoon paper, the Des Moines Tribune, reports on his Sept. 22, 1959, arrival at the Des Moines airport to visit his friend, seed entrepreneur Roswell Garst, in Coon Rapids. The excursion follows a Pulitzer-winning 1956 editorial by the Register's Lauren K. Soth inviting a Soviet delegation to come to Iowa to study its agriculture.
