HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Camp No Limits in Hamden is doing just that — teaching children with lost limbs, or who have limb differences — how to access the world.

“They’re tying shoes, putting their hair in a ponytail and learning how to cut food, those sorts of things,” said Mary Leighton, who founded the camp.

The overnight camp is held on the Quinnipiac University campus. In its ninth year, 20 campers learned that anything is possible.

“I think that’s the biggest thing, is to not be held back by thinking that there’s something you can’t do,” Leighton said. “Here at camp, we really try to figure out how you can do it, how to make it happen.”

The key, she said, is therapy. For 5-year-old Zoey, who was born without her right hand, her three years with the camp have been valuable.

“More importantly, she gets to interact with other people who look similar to her,” her father, Jason Meyers, said. “It just helps with acceptance, helps her learn important life traits.”
