La Porte Eyes Smoke and Vape Restrictions
(La Porte, IN) - LaPorte officials are looking to discourage the opening of additional smoke and vape shops they feel already exist here in great enough numbers. The city council Monday night was presented with a measure that requires any new smoke and vape shops received approval from the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals before opening.
Downed trees and torn roofs after heavy winds hit Michiana
WALKERTON & KNOX, Ind.-- People are still picking up the pieces after storms and heavy winds rolled through Michiana Monday night. At Kraft Auction Service in Walkerton, off East U.S. 6, the roof to one of the warehouses was blown clean off, leaving a mangled pile of metal on the ground.
More Costly Water/Sewer Upgrades Proposed

The Michigan Street Master Plan will also be up for discussion, along with an update on the Marshall County Career Innovation Center. The commission members will also review the annual economic development agreement with the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation.
City of Knox Family Fun Day Huge Success
The Knox City Council discussed the Family Fun Day held over the Fourth of July weekend during their meeting last week. City of Knox Mayor Dennis Estok stated they had an amazing turnout during their annual Family Fun Day. He said the class of 1974 was the first class to take advantage of having their 50 year class reunion at the Knox Alumni Reunion to kick off the weekend’s festivities. Estok stated, the July 4th parade saw the most entries in the event’s history as well.
Surf Internet to Soon Provide Service to Hamlet
A Surf Internet representative was before the Hamlet Town Council members Wednesday, July 10 to discuss plans of running service to the Hamlet area. Meetings will be held with Street Superintendent Kevin Leinbach before construction starts for the four sections in which crews will work throughout town. According to Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts, there was not an exact date of when construction would start.

North Judson Town Council Accepts Generous Donation
The North Judson Town Council received a generous gift from the Ober Arbor Gleaners during their meeting Monday, July 15. Gleaner Member Mark Rippy appeared before the town council previously and asked how the organization could help in terms of projects in the park or other needs in the town. The council members said the purchase of picnic tables to compliment the Town Park improvement project would be great upon the approval of the organization. The tables will be placed under the newly constructed pavilion.
North Judson Town Council Approves Quote for Fencing at Highland Cemetery, Council to Meet Tonight
The North Judson Town Council members discussed quotes for fencing at the Highland Cemetery when they met July 1. Town Manager Joe Leszek said black chain link fence will be installed on the east side of the cemetery with no gate. Quotes came from White’s Fencing with $13,600, Mullet’s Fencing from Plymouth with $13,890.21, and Custom Fencing out of Warsaw with $14,700.
Culver Community School Board to Meet Tonight
The Culver Community School Board members will meet tonight where they will discuss a ground lease with the Culver Youth Club. The board will also take action on a Memorandum of Understanding with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, and approve edits to the wage and salary schedule for the 2024-2025 school year.
Culver Town Council to Hold Special Meeting Tonight
The Culver Town Council members will be meeting in special session tonight to discuss the Lions Club roof. Club members approached the Culver Town Council during their meeting Thursday, July 11 to request help in funding the replacement of the roof. The Lion Club has a 25-year lease agreement which began in 2015 with the Town for use of the Depot for meetings and functions. Annette Osborn spoke for the Lions and stated that the roof had recently become an increasing concern. She stated that they have one bid and expected a second bid to be available Friday, July 12. After discussion by the council, Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim suggested holding a special session to consider the funding after all bids had been received by the Lions Club.
