HANCEVILLE, Ala. – At the first regularly scheduled meeting of July, held on Thursday, July 11, the Hanceville City Council tackled several pieces of business, including a donation to the Hanceville High School marching band to assist in the purchase of new uniforms, an agreement with local pregnancy resource center First Source for Women and the reevaluation of a City ordinance to allow tattoo studios.
Hanceville High School asked the council for its support in the meeting. According to the request the council received, the marching band uniforms are old and outdated, leaving the band in need of new uniforms for the upcoming football season, an expense likely to set the organization back $40,000-$50,000. The council discussed appropriate actions in response to the request and the available funds within the City’s budget for such a donation. Mayor Pro Tem Kim Brown stated that fairness should come into play, as the council has previously supported other school-sponsored extracurricular activities.
“I think we should. We supported the (HHS) cheerleaders and bought an ad,” Brown reminded the council.
Councilman John Stam proposed a $1,000 donation to the program for uniforms. The council approved the donation.
First Source for Women (FSFW) also asked the council for help. The FSFW Hanceville location is situated next to a City-owned lot; FSFW Executive Director Janet Davis implored the council for permission to demolish a concrete structure on the lot and erect a covered parking area for the center’s mobile unit. Davis made an additional request, as the mobile unit requires a steady power source. She asked the council for permission to install an outdoor outlet to provide electricity to the vehicle; the power supply would be billed to FSFW directly.
Furthermore, Davis agreed that should FSFW vacate its current location, the new structure would revert to the City’s ownership and not relocate with the center. The council approved Davis’ request.
Hanceville resident Kourtney Quick spoke to the council in hopes of the City amending its current zoning ordinance to allow verbiage for a tattoo studio to be opened on the corner of Blountsville Street and Church Avenue. Receiving public comments for the studio from Quick and her family and supporters, the council also heard arguments from St. Boniface Catholic Mission members who were concerned the studio’s proximity to two local churches could negatively impact the children in the community.
The council tabled the discussion and committed to finding a solution that would be acceptable to both sides while ensuring the safety and well-being of children in the area. The discussion will reconvene at the next Hanceville City Council Meeting on July 25.
The council also tabled the discussion of IT maintenance at the Hanceville Police Department until the next meeting; it is awaiting a cost estimate before proceeding.
In other business, the council:
- Approved the disconnection of all (three) City-owned security lights on public alleyways
Approved the extension of Elm Street and property donation to the City of Hanceville, totaling approximately 60-75 feet
