(WWJ) — A 22-year-old man from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, who police believe is responsible for hitting and seriously injuring an 80-year-old man, as well as a series of “politically motivated” crimes, has been found dead.

Officials with the Hancock Police Department say the elderly man was putting up a political sign in his yard around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 21 when he was hit by an ATV, allegedly on purpose.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was last listed in critical condition.

Authorities say the driver of the ATV is believed to be responsible for two other incidents that “involved vehicles that were intentionally vandalized.”

“It is believed that the person driving the ATV is involved in all three incidents. Be aware, the subject appeared to target both Trump and Law Enforcement supporters,” Hancock police officials said in a Sunday press release.

WLUC TV in Marquette reported on Tuesday Hancock police officers and Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in Quincy Township after getting a message from a person who said they “wanted to confess to a crime involving an ATV driver within the last 24 hours.”

The person asked for police to “send someone to pick me up,” according to the WLUC report.

When police got to the home, they found the man dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputies obtained a search warrant for the residence and recovered several electronic devices, which will be searched by forensic specialists, according to the report.
