(Atlantic) Longtime sports Broadcaster Chris Varney joined the team this week as the new KSOM Sports Director. Varney replaces Zach Collins, who is returning to his home state of Indiana to pursue a career in education.

Varney was born in Washington, D.C., grew up in Maryland, and graduated from Ohio University. He knew at a young age that he wanted to work in broadcasting.

His first job was as a part-time radio producer for a Double-A Baseball team. His first broadcast was in Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. He went on to work for KSCJ Radio in Sioux City doing play-by-play and was the voice of Briar Cliff University for football and basketball. Following his time in Sioux City, Chris spent 13 years as the sports director at KGRN Radio in Grinnell as the play-by-play voice for Grinnell College and Grinnell High School. In 2023, the Athletic Directors honored Varney with the “Broadcaster of the Year” Award.

Chris Varney says he will bring passion, excitement, and respect to his future broadcasts at KSOM Radio.

Chris Varney will be in Harlan tonight broadcasting the Substate Final between Harlan and Lewis Central for a 7:00 p.m. start.
