Worldwide outage delays, cancels flights from Bradley International Airport

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Bradley International Airport Friday morning is reporting roughly 20 departure delays while the world contends with a major Microsoft and Crowdstrike outage .

As of 10:15 a.m., there were about 14 delays and six cancellations. Most of the flights affected are earlier ones, as airports across the world are experiencing multi-hour full ground stops.

A representative with Bradley International Airport said they are aware of a nationwide issue.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. Passenger are advised to check the status of their flight with the airline,” airport officials said.

That glitch was a failed Microsoft update that crashed computers around the world. It was scariest for travelers who were in the air overnight. Sierra Silversides was flying from Detroit to Providence.

“Our scheduled time to get to Providence was 1:05 in the morning. At 1:12, we were still in the air. They told us we had to emergency land on the tarmac here,” Silversides said.

Affected carriers said they could not safely communicate, so Delta, United, and American airlines all put ground stops on their flights. That meant none of their planes could take off.

At LaGuardia Airport, that led to agitated crowds all morning. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said while its systems were not affected by the outage, plenty of airlines were and no one should head to Newark Liberty, JFK, or LaGuardia without first checking with their airline.

Passengers complain the airlines are not reaching out to them.

“We didn’t really receive any text messages or anything from them before we got here, so we were kind of stuck once we got here. Hopefully we’ll be able to fly out soon.”

Also hoping to fly soon was the entire Hartford Athletic soccer team, hoping not to forfeit tomorrow’s match against the Riverhounds.

“We have an important game in Pittsburgh. Got the news that there’s a flight delay. Something we have dealt with in the past, but we’re hopeful that this gets started as soon as possible,” said Hartford Athletic Captain Jordan Scarlet.

Tweed New Haven Airport officials said they are not affected by the outage.

News 8 has been reaching out to agencies across the state to see if they’ve been affected. Most have not, including the Connecticut State Police, the Yale New Haven Health System, West Haven 911 center, and Tolland County 911.

However, Coventry police said their computers- along with all town offices and departments there- were affected during the early morning hours. They were able to get them back up and running before 8:30 a.m.

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles said issues related to licensing transactions have been reported nationwide.

“Customers may experience delays when completing their transactions in-person and may experience error messaging when completing transactions online,” the agency said in an alert .

Around 7:15 a.m., Governor Ned Lamont said they are in the process of assessing what impacts the outage may have had on state computer systems.

The Connecticut Emergency Management & Homeland Security agency said the state is “managing through some effects” of the outage and will continue to monitor the situation.

Hartford HealthCare officials reported “minimal” impact across their system and patient care operations.

Representatives with the Federal Aviation Administration said they are closely monitoring a technical issue impacting IT systems at U.S. airlines.

“Several airlines have requested FAA assistance with ground stops until the issue is resolved,” they said.

CrowdStrike confirmed the outage was not caused by a cyberattack , but was due to a defect in a single content update.
