Hundreds of millions of dollars spent on delivering internet service yet large gaps remain
Since 2019, Wisconsin has allocated more than $345 million in state and federal funds to expand high-speed internet in the state, yet there are still more than 181,000 locations without service, according to a 2024 Governor’s Task Force on Broadband Access report released Thursday. The funding will support new and improved service for more than 410,000 homes and businesses, but more work remains to close access gaps, the report noted. ...

MIAD Pre-College 2024 sees record-breaking enrollment
The Summer Pre-College program at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) returned with record-breaking enrollment in 2024. The popular program, presented by Associated Bank and part of MIAD’s Youth + Community Program offerings, registered 255 students from around the country. Students chose from Core or Advanced classes in everything from fashion and graphic design to photography and animation.

Woman who served time for prior child neglect charge now charged in stepson's death
A woman who previously served time in prison for child neglect is now facing charges in connection to the death of her 6-year-old stepson. Anitra Burks, 33, of Milwaukee, was charged Friday with intentional homicide and neglecting a child in connection with Zane Adams' death. Miramont Behavioral Health leaders talk Waukesha location, growth plans
Miramont Behavioral Health in Middleton marked its three-year anniversary this month. The 72-bed hospital, which is owned by Summit BHC, is operating at 46 beds, with 28 for adults and 18 for teenagers. It plans to add 10 more adolescent beds this fall, bringing the total number of beds to 56.
Wisconsin Police Responding to Hostage Situation Strike Body Lying in Roadway
Milwaukee, WI – Wisconsin police officers responding to a hostage situation early Saturday morning struck a body lying in the roadway on W. North Avenue. According to the Milwaukee Police Department, the incident occurred around 2:36 a.m. The 57-year-old individual had been previously hit by a black older SUV, which fled the scene before officers arrived. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
