HCRA: Kai ‘Ehitu claims second regatta win of season
Kai ‘Ehitu Canoe Club won its second regatta of the Moku O Hawai’i Outrigger Canoe Racing Association 2024 season on Saturday in Hilo Bay — accumulating 28 points and 233 points. The team also collected the most wins with 12 gold medals. The race day was sponsored by Kamehameha Canoe Club - Hilo.

Temporary lane changes scheduled for bridge rehab project in Hilo
Temporary travel lane changes are scheduled as county crews continue their work on the Pauahi Bridge Rehab project in Hilo. Starting July 8, the Department of Public Works Engineering Division and Jas. W. Coach Mizuguchi Resigns After Six Seasons With the Vulcans
UH Hilo Tennis head coach Kallen Mizuguchi resigned after six seasons leading both the Hawai’i Hilo Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs. Following a four-year playing career with the Vulcans, the hometown native and UH Hilo alum was named interim head coach for both of the Hawai’i Hilo Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs in Feb. 2019, guiding the men’s team to a Pacific West Conference Championship runner-up finish followed by the first of two NCAA Championship Semifinalist placements. Mizuguchi was given the permanent role in June and later followed up in 2021 by claiming the PacWest Conference title.

Public encouraged to report illegal fireworks to state-run task force
While fireworks are part of typical Fourth of July celebrations, state officials are encouraging the public to report illegal pyrotechnics. The Department of Law Enforcement states the public has three ways, including a new smartphone app, to report illegal aerial fireworks to the Illegal Fireworks Task Force. All reports will remain anonymous unless the reporting person wishes to provide their identity or contact information.
Hawai‘i County park returns to its original place name
A Pāhoa park sign now bears its original place name. On Wednesday, community leaders, students elected officials and local residents held a blessing for Waiakahi‘ula Beach Park, formerly known as Kahakai Park. The change honors the original place name as well as the cultural history of the area.
