Watch out for toxic algae bloom at north end of Hayden Lake

    2024-07-27

HAYDEN LAKE, Idaho - Health officials in Idaho want to warn you about a harmful algae bloom on the north end of Hayden Lake.

According to the Panhandle Health District, recent samplings of the north end of the lake from McLeans bay north had cyanobacteria, which can lead to liver and nervous system issues in people and pets if ingested.

People using the lake as drinking water should know the toxins cannot be removed by boiling or filtering the water.

PHD said if you're going to eat fish from the lake, make sure to remove all fat, skin and organs before cooking.

Symptoms of cyanobacteria exposure include rashes, hives, diarrhea, vomiting, coughing, wheezing, and liver or nervous system problems.
