A 19-year-old Hayward man, Reese J. Frederick, died Friday June 21 as the result of a one-vehicle rollover on Highline Road approximately five miles south of Hayward.

Sawyer County Sheriff Doug Mrotek reported that at 3:16 a.m June 21, the Sawyer County dispatch center received a 911 call reporting a single-vehicle rollover with multiple injuries on Highline Road south of the intersection with Williams Road in the town of Bass lake.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, assisted by the City and Town of Hayward police departments, Lac Courte Oreilles Police Department, Sawyer County EMS, Wisconsin State Patrol, Town of Bass Lake and Town of Hayward fire departments.

Initial investigation indicates that a 2005 Ford Explorer operated by Dabid Flores, 20, of Hayward was northbound on Highline Road at a high rate of speed. Flores lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn multiple times and come to rest in the east ditch line of the northbound lane.

Three passengers in the Flores vehicle, Reese J Frederick, 19, of Hayward, a 17 year old female and a 16 year old female, also from Hayward, were ejected from the vehicle.

Frederick received fatal injuries and was prounced dead at the scene, the 16 and 17 year old female passengers sustained life threatening injuries and were transported to a Minnesota hospital for medical treatment. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

Flores received minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital. He is currently being held in the Sawyer County Jail pending a charge of second degree recklessly endangering safety.

Speed and alcohol are believed to a contributing factor in the crash, Sheriff Mrotek said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, Sawyer County medical examiner and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
