    Hawks top Blue Hills, Haugen at Musky Fest

    The Hayward Hawks won two games over Musky Festival weekend at Larry Somerville Field, defeating the Blue Hills Beasts 5-2 Friday night and topping the Haugen Knights 13-11 on Saturday.

    On Friday, starting pitcher Jonah Sande gave up two hits and two runs in seven innings, striking out five and walking one. Matt Flesher earned the save in two innings of relief, striking out the side in both the eighth and ninth innings while walking one.

    Austin Wessel scored three runs, getting one hit, a walk and being hit by a pitch. Phil Zeigle drove in two runs with a double and a fielder’s choice. Terry Kilmer had an RBI single. Trent Kirkland reached base on an error and scored on a passed ball.

    On Saturday, the Knights scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take a 11-6 lead. But the Hawks rallied to score five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 11-11.

    The Hawks then scored two in the eighth to win 13-11. Kilmer reached base on a second baseman’s error, Kirkland walked, Jonah Sande singled to drive in a run and Flesher singled.

    Tom Danczyk pitched nine innings to get the win, giving up six hits including a grand slam home run by Easton Stone in the seventh inning while walking seven and striking out five.

    At the plate, Danczyk had three hits including a double and drove in two runs, Terry KIlmer, Jonah Sande and Phil Zeigle each had one hit and an RBI, Austin Wessel had three hits including a double and three RBIs, Flesher had one hit and two RBIs, and Kirkland walked three times and scored three runs.

    The Hawks improved their record to 7-2 on the season. They will travel to Haugen to play the Knights this Friday, and then will host the Spooner Cardinals on Thursday July 4.
