    City council approves school resource officer contract

    At their postponed regular meeting July 10, the Hayward City Council approved an agreement with the Hayward Community School District to provide two sworn full-time police officers as School Resource Officers (SROs) to work in the schools during the 186-day school year in 2024-25 when students are present.

    The agreement’s stated purpose is to “provide the SROs to receive the necessary support and training to ensure a safe school environment, the building of relationships, offering student support, maintaining a positive educational environment, respecting the rights of students and improving the overall school culture.”

    The agreement states that “An SRO has three main roles: educator, informal counselor/mentor and law enforcement officer.”

    In other business, the council:

    Approved a fire department automatic mutual aid agreement between the city and Town of Bass lake.

    Authorized the issuance and sale of up to $349,836 in water system revenue bonds and $354,081 in sewerage system revenue bonds;

    Voted to apply to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Clean Water Fund program for financial assistance for the Second Street reconstruction project sanitary sewer replacement.

    Voted to apply to the DNR Safe Drinking Water Fund program for financial assistance for the Second Street reconstruction project.

    Approved a payment of $380,116 to A-1 Excavating LLC for the Second Street reconstruction project.

    Approved a fermented malt beverage license for Walgreen’s from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.

    7) Set a special meeting with the Town of Hayward Board for 5 p.m. Thursday July 25 to discuss fire department facilities and other topics of mutual concern. This meeting will be open to the public.

    8) Approved the list of Business Improvement District (BID) officers who were re-elected recently.

    9) Approved bar operator licenses for 14 people.

    10) Approved a consent agenda which includes a 10% increase, $7,212, in the yearly premium with Spectrum Insurance Group, reflecting increases in worker’s compensation coverage and the overall value of the city’s vehicles.

    Public Works Director John McCue reported that the Second Street project is on schedule and half done as of July 6.
