North Carolina A&T headed to rare non-GHOE sellout vs. rival

North Carolina A&T appears headed for a rare non-homecoming sellout for its season opener against long-time HBCU rival Winston-Salem State University (WSSU).

Single-game tickets for North Carolina A&T’s football game against WSSU are reportedly moving fast and likely to sell-out.

Homecoming selling out is nothing new for NC A&T, which sold out its homecoming game in short order despite coming off a 1-10 season.

Non-homecoming sellouts are a bit more rare. It had only happened four times since the year 2000, with three of those sellouts coming from WSSU visits to East Greensboro. The 2006, 2008 and 2010 games in the series all sold out as WSSU attempted to move to Division I-AA and join the MEAC. The only other sellout came against arch-nemesis North Carolina Central in 2017.

The rivalry between North Carolina A&T and Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is one of the most storied and intense in HBCU sports. Dating back to their first meeting in 1944, the two schools, located just 30 minutes apart, have faced off numerous times in football. This rivalry is not just about proximity but also a deep-seated competition that has shaped the athletic identities of both institutions.

North Carolina A&T leads the series with a commanding 36-12 record. However, WSSU has had its moments of triumph, including the last time the teams met in 2010 when the Rams defeated the Aggies 21-14 in Greensboro. This victory added fuel to the rivalry despite the fact that the two schools play on two different levels.
