Fire crews in northern Arizona have sprung into action to battle the Weimer Fire, a lightning-sparked blaze currently affecting 55 acres of the Black Mesa Ranger District, north of Forest Lakes and west of Heber-Overgaard. According to emergency bulletin updates, the wildfire is being fought with a commitment to full suppression. Teams are creating containment lines using accessible forest roads and constructing a dozer line to the north today, to prevent the flames’ spread.

Firefighters respond to blaze near Heber
Firefighters are responding to a lightning-caused fire burning north of Forest Lakes and west of Heber-Overgaard on the Apache Sitgreaves National Forests. The Weimer Fire is around 55 acres and is burning in an old fire scar from the 2009 Wagon Draw fire. Firefighters are working to fully suppress the wildfire with four engines, a dozer and a helicopter. They’re using existing forest roads and a dozer line for containment, and expect to begin ignition operations on Friday or Saturday to burn fuels near the control lines.
Fire Crews Working on lightning caused Weimer Fire
Apache–Sitgreaves National Forest fire crews responded to the lightning caused Weimer Fire, north of Forest Lakes and west of Heber-Overgaard. Crews are working to fully suppress the fire. Officials say the fire is burning within the Wagon Draw Fire scar from 2009. There are no structures threatened and no evacuations at this time. Smoke will be visible throughout the weekend from Highways-260, 277, and the communities of Forest Lakes and Heber/Overgaard. Firefighters are conducting ignition operations to burn available fuels near control lines. Some temporary closures are in place.

Snowflake man arrested after allegedly leaving accident scene
A Snowflake man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and other charges after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident on June 17. According to the Navajo County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a report of an accident on June 17 near Concho Highway and El Dorado, east of Snowflake. When they arrived they found one vehicle had fled the scene. The vehicle was later found in the 3900 block of Del Contento Road in Snowflake.

The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office reported the following activity in Area 3 during the period of June 16-22. Area 3 includes Heber, Overgaard, Aripine, Chevelon Retreat, Chevelon Acres, Antelope Valley, Clay Springs and Pinedale. Persons who were cited, charged or arrested by deputies are accused of committing criminal activity, but such accusations should raise no inference of guilt.
