The internet was in shambles over Tyrese Gibson’s noticeably fake beard and eclectic outfit as he sang the National Anthem during an NFL preseason game on Aug. 11.

On Sunday, the 45-year-old singer-turned-actor took to the stage at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium to deliver a soulful rendition of the National Anthem during a football game between the Rams and Dallas Cowboys. While the crowd expected to be moved by his performance, they couldn’t help but focus on Tyrese’s striking and downright hilarious appearance.

Sporting a bushy faux beard and a fake afro that completely hid his trademark bald head, the R&B star looked quite different. He finished the look with a black and white checkered shirt and a black vest reminiscent of ’70s disco fashion. To add to the comedy, Tyrese, known for his powerful voice, opted for a softer, more whispery approach to the anthem, with some wavering notes that didn’t quite hit the mark.

Netizens on X sent jokes flying left and right across the platform directly after the bizarre performance. Some pondered why the singer wore a “lace front wig” and a fake beard during the show. Some users speculated that he might have been paying tribute to the legendary Marvin Gaye, who famously sported a similar look during his illustrious career. However, others criticized him, saying his attempt to honor the R&B icon was “embarrassing.”

One user wrote, “So nobody was gonna tell me Tyrese was out here singing the National Anthem in a lace front wig AND beard tryna sing like Marvin Gaye? UNPROVOKED?!”

    Tyrese speaks out.

On Aug. 12, Tyrese took to Instagram to clear the air and address concerns about his strange appearance. He revealed that the fake beard and hair were, in fact, a costume worn to promote his new movie WILDFLOWER , which is dedicated to his late mother, Priscilla Murray Gibson, who died after a battle with COVID-19 in 2022. According to his Instagram post, the film is out now.

He also confirmed that the get-up was a tribute to Marvin Gaye, as fans expected, noting that the late singer once performed steps away from SoFi Stadium’s location.

“Marvin Gaye sung the most legendary rendition of the national anthem exactly NEXT DOOR to the newly built SOFI ARENA at the GREAT WESTERN FORUM at a lakers game…. So why not???? Few bad notes yikes . But my heart was full for LA and my heart was full for our county…. To this day the ONLY thing that brings every race, nationally and political party under one room to embrace some real fun and yet thick thick competition is SPORTS……. 80,000 strong…. What a moment what a freakin moment thank you LA,” Tyrese added.
