President, Hofstra University

Susan Poser became the ninth president of Hofstra University and the first woman to hold this role when she assumed the office in 2021. Since then, she has focused on engaging the entire campus community in a conversation about Hofstra’s future. Leveraging her 30 years of experience in higher education, Poser initiated a multi-step, inclusive process to create a new strategic plan for the university.

In fall 2023, Hofstra opened its largest academic building, the Science & Innovation Center, a 75,000-square-foot facility that houses the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies, and the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science. This past spring, the university received a $35 million gift for the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, bequeathed by Hofstra alumnus Charles C. Frei. This gift is the second largest gift in Hofstra’s history. During Poser’s time as president, there have been significant increases in Hofstra’s enrollment, student retention, the number of faculty of color and alumni giving. She has hired four vice presidents and five academic deans and created several new positions, including a vice president for equity and inclusion and an associate to the president for government and community affairs.

Prior to joining Hofstra, Poser served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Before that, she was a law professor at the University of Nebraska for more than 20 years and held several other positions, including associate to the chancellor and dean of the College of Law.

Poser, who grew up in New York City, holds a Juris Doctor and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley.
