Henrico Schools to host back-to-school event, Hoop It up tournament Aug. 9

Henrico County Public Schools will host its “Back-to-School Kickoff” Aug. 9 at the Henrico Sports and Events Center. The event will feature a variety of activities for families, including the return of the 3-on-3 Hoop It Up basketball tournament, a pep-rally style celebration, a school and community resource fair, a “Kid Zone” area and an immunization clinic.

Competition in the basketball tournament, which is free for students in grades 3-12, will begin at 8 a.m. and continue through 7 p.m. in various divisions. The pep-rally celebration is scheduled to take place at approximately 12:30 p.m., and a school and community resource fair will be open from noon to 4 p.m. The Kid Zone area will be open from noon to 5:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the day.

In addition to the academic activities, the Back-to-School Kickoff will also provide an opportunity for families to meet and interact with school leaders. HCPS representatives will be in attendance to assist and speak with students. Families also are invited to donate school supplies and backpacks at the event if they wish.

School begins Monday, Aug. 19.
