Wisconsin Maritime Museum to share behind-the-scenes artifacts at event this month

MANITOWOC – Yes, Manitowoc is home to the most completely restored World War II submarine on display , the USS Cobia.

But it’s also home to many other maritime artifacts.

Every artifact at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum , 75 Maritime Drive, has a story to tell. From the largest artifacts — like the USS Cobia — all the way down to the smallest — like the shards of glass from USS Guavina’s christening bottle — the artifacts tell the stories of the people who interacted with them.

The person tasked with caring for these artifacts and preserving their stories is the museum's archivist and collections manager, Serena Stuettgen.

From 5 to 6 p.m. Sept. 12, Stuettgen will lead a behind-the-scenes viewing of artifacts not on display from the 28 submarines built in Manitowoc. Those attending can learn about the story behind the objects and discover what it's like to care for them on a day-to-day basis.

Space is limited and advanced registration is required. Tickets are $35 for non-members and $30 for members and are available in person or online at shop.wisconsinmaritime.org , or call the museum at 920-684-0218.

Wisconsin Maritime Museum is a top-tier Smithsonian-affiliated maritime museum. It’s open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays-Mondays. The flagship exhibit is the USS Cobia, which is open for tours.
