    Jeanne Thurlow Cullings

    Jeanne Thurlow Cullings, 87, of 203 Evergreen Drive, Hertford, NC, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2024 in her home. Mrs. Cullings was born in Rochester, NY, on February 3, 1937, and was the daughter of the late James Henry Thurlow and Cora Creveling Thurlow Anderson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Emerson Milroy Cullings, Jr., her brother, Thomas Thurlow (wife, Judy, deceased), and two brothers-in-law, Jack Lavery and Peter LeRoy. A graduate of State University of New York at Geneseo, she was a longtime educator having started as a teacher in grades K-7 and then pursued her interest in Special Education where she held positions as teacher, lead teacher, and principal. She had a passion for children and helping instill the tools and education needed to live a productive life. She was a great motivator and worked closely with teachers and parents as they endeavored to provide for the educational needs of their children. She and Emerson lived in Scottsville NY for many years and retired to the Snug Harbor community in Perquimans County, NC, where they became very active in both the Homeowners Association and the Civic League. Together they loved to play golf and were long time members at The Links at Mulberry Hill in Edenton, where she also served on the board Surviving are her two sisters, Lois Lavery and Carol LeRoy, a brother-in-law, Mark Cullings; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 25, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by Pastor Jay Rivenbark. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Albemarle Home Care and Hospice, and to her special caregivers for their love and concern for Jeanne and her family.
