Officials: Man fatally stabbed while forcing way in to ex-girlfriend's home in Hesperia

A man stabbed and killed another man who tried to force his way into a Hesperia home on Monday night, authorities said.

The deadly incident took place about 9:20 p.m. in the 16500 block of Sequoia Street, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies responded to a call when they encountered Daniel Cook, 62, of Hesperia performing CPR on Ruben Castillo, 59, of Apple Valley, who was suffering from stab wounds, sheriff's officials said. Paramedics took Castillo to a hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.

Detectives from the sheriff's Homicide Detail took charge of the case.

"During the investigation, it was discovered Castillo arrived at the home where his ex-girlfriend lived and forced open a window," according to a sheriff's department statement . "Daniel Cook was inside the residence and became involved in a physical altercation with Castillo. Castillo was stabbed during the altercation."

Those who witnessed the incident claim Castillo’s actions "led to a subsequent defense of life and property," the statement said.

No arrests were made at the scene.

Detectives will submit their findings to the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office for review, sheriff's officials said.
